FRSC WARNS AGAINST SPEED LIMIT VIOLATION

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Nseobong Akpabio (CC) on Wednesday, 17 th September 2008 warned motorists to adhere strictly to prescribed speed limit and avoid constant temptations of excessive speeding.

Akpabio said that the Commission has over the time come to the realization that speed limit violation and dangerous overtaking are the major causes of road traffic crashes recorded in the FCT and the nations highways in general.

The FCT Sector Commander made this known while reacting to the incident of a lone accident on Tuesday afternoon involving a Volkswagen Golf car with registration number AJ861SUL at kilometre 2 after Piri junction along Kwali – Abaji highway. According to the Sector Commander, eight persons were involved the accident but none died. Officers from the Yangoji Unit Command of the FRSC responded to the distress call and cleared the obstruction which the Sector Commander attributed the to dangerous driving and speed limit violation.

In a related incident, four (4) persons died in the early hours of Wednesday, 17 th September in the morning when a Luxury bus belonging to Gibson Motors collided with a truck with registration number XL834ABC at Gada Biu at about 4.30pm along Abuja – Lokoja highway. FCT Sector Commander, Nseobong Akpabio who confirmed the accident revealed that the plate number of the luxury bus had been removed before his men arrived the accident scene. Akpabio said that the driver of the MAN Diesel truck which collided with the luxury bus also died in the accident. He said the deceased and the injured were taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission and also attributed the cause of the accident to dangerous driving and speed limit violation. The Sector Commander further warned against night journey because of its dangerous implications.
