The Federal Road Safety Corps’ football team; Safety strikers have been promoted from the amateur football league to the national professional league after securing a one nil victory against the Benue Cement Company, BCC lions at Gboko last month.
This revelation formed part of the presentation of the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka at the opening ceremony of the inaugural edition of the Corps Marshal Sports Championship, at the Aguiyi Ironsi Cantonment Abuja.
Speaking further, the Corps Marshal identified sports as ‘’a veritable tool for the sustenance of a physically fit workforce, fostering friendship and unity among the participants, and an avenue for the discovery of hidden talents that could be trained and empowered to realize their ambitions for future national and international competitions” he said.
This drive the Corps Marshall added, has placed the FRSC on the course towards activating the plans of the United Nations Decade of Action which has as its ultimate goal, the reduction of road crashes by 50% by 2020 through increased enforcement, aggressive public enlightenment which requires a healthy workforce that is mentally sound and physically committed towards ensuring safer roads in Nigeria.
Speaking earlier, the Secretary of Transport, Federal Capital Territory Authority; Mr. Johnathan Ivoke who represented the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Authority, commended the synergy which the FRSC has built with the FCT administration over the years, which has culminated to prompt response to road traffic crashes and reduction in the frequency of road traffic crashes.
The four-day competition has contingents drawn from Enugu, Illorin, Benin, Lagos, Jos, Sokoto, Oshogbo, and Bauchi Zonal Commands, in addition to the national Headquarters, Abuja. Events competed for include Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Table Tennis, Badminton and athletics with Christy Mbaduwe, Edith Anum and Ozioma Enyioko all from the national headquarters taking the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals respectively in the Badminton female single events.
Similarly, the volley male team from Oshogbo beat their opponents from Abuja in the final game to win the gold while the Abuja female handball team beat the counterparts from Bauchi Zone to win gold.
Meanwhile, the Abuja team beat the Lagos football team by 3-0 to set up a final clash with the Jos team which beat Enugu zone 6-1.The closing ceremony which will witness the presentation of trophies and medals, will hold on 5 August, 2010.
