SAFETY HELMET CAMPAIGN:NIGERIAN BREWERIES DONATES 10,000 HELMETS The nationwide advocacy initiated by the Federal Road Safety Corps on compulsory use of safety helmet by motorcycle operators, has received a major boost through a concluded arrangement by Management of the Nigerian Breweries PLC to distribute 10,000 pieces of helmets among motor bike operators at designated locations across the country. Making this disclosure at a recent media briefing organized by the FRSC and Nigerian Breweries to commence this year’s edition of the annual ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ safety awareness campaign,the company’s Corporate Affairs Adviser,Mr. Yusuf Ageni stated that the 10,000 helmets form part of the Nigerian Breweries Corporate Social Responsibility to complement the statutory roles of the FRSC aimed at injecting order and sanity in the activities of motor bike operators in Nigeria. Similarly, Mr.Ageni said that the helmets will be distributed at Ibadan,Lagos, Aba,Enugu and Kaduna which have been designated as workshop venues for this year’s ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ campaign aimed at addressing the unpleasant trend of drunk driving among Nigerian motoring public. Speaking further ,he said that the monthly statistics on road crash stand at 400 deaths and added that the thrust of the campaign is to tackle the menace of fatal road crash in the country especially during the third quarter of the year (ember season) when social activities are usually at its peak The Corporate Affairs Adviser also said that this year’s campaign will not only explore new areas but will strive towards on-the-spot assessment of areas covered by the campaign in order to measure its effectiveness in future. According to him, the campaign has received a standing ovation at a conference in Europe organized by Heineken operating companies across the globe adding that the major thrust of the campaign is to educate consumers of alcohol beverage to adopt a positive and responsive approach towards alcohol consumption in order to stem the tide of drunk-related road traffic crashes. Speaking also, the FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Corps Commander Samuel Obayemi stated that choice is a major element in individual strive towards responsive consumption of alcohol ‘when we drive under the influence of alcohol,we have made a clear-cut choice and like other choices in life, this one has direct consequences of road traffic crash which could be serious or fatal’. He further stated that the FRSC considers the partnership with Nigerian Breweries among other numerous campaign build up towards addressing traffic peculiarities associated with the Ember season. |
