ILLEGAL PARKIING: TANKER DRIVER DARE LASTMA AGAIN IN LAGOS A fresh face off may be imminent between the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and tanker drivers over illegal parking of trucks. Less that a week after calling off a strike in protest of the seizure of their 27 trucks, which were allegedly parked on the major road, tanker drivers are said to be back on the road. The State government had slammed a fine of N2.7m on the tanker drivers which was later paid on their behalf by the NNPC to secure the release of the seized tankers. Following the return of the tankers on the roads, the state government has threatened to continuously clamp down on erring operators. Several trucks were sighted on Sunday at Toyota Bus stop on the Oshodi – Apapa Expressway stretching from the Siemens office to DHL and the highway leading to the Airport. The vehicles waiting to enter the trailer park recently sited next to the PZ factory, were said to have been parked on the road since Friday. However, the trucks had disappeared from the roads by Monday morning apparently acting on a tip off tha LASTMA officials were planning to swoop on them again. Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, said government would continue to impound any truck parked on the road side. But a member of the tanker drivers who spoke on behalf of the tanker drivers denied that the drivers parked on the roads According to him, the drivers merely parked outside when there was no space inside the park and it was only for a short time. It will recalled that, the Lagos State Government under the instrumentality of LASTMA has been having a running battle with operators of tankers and trailers over wrong parking in Lagos. |
