FRSC RESCUES 1,300 ROAD CRASH VICTIMS

About one thousand three hundred victims of road traffic crashes were rescued alive by the Federal Road Safety Corps during its on-going nationwide operation zero tolerance special operation, aimed at reducing road crashes during this year’s yuletide celebrations, between 20-30 December, 2011.

Making this declaration while on patrol along the Asaba- Onitsha highway, the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka said that the massive deployment of the Corps’ personnel and logistics such as ambulances, tow trucks, motor bikes, patrol vehicles, extricating machines along designated routes of the highways and unprecedented support from other relevant agencies through aerial surveillance, provided an effective platform for the Corps to raise the level of its routine patrols and rescue activities during the festive season.

According to him, the presence of the FRSC operatives along strategic route of the highways and the use of mobile courts to try traffic offenders, has impacted positively on motorists through improved traffic conduct, adding that the FRSC will utilize its findings to consolidate on strategies towards safer road use in Nigeria especially during the yuletide and other festive seasons.

Chidoka who also distributed safety handbills on the Onitsha head bridge, said that a total of 269 road crashes were recorded during the special patrol with 827 injured persons while 8,344 traffic offenders were arrested for contravening 8,850 traffic related offences. 598 motorists were also arraigned before mobile courts with 557 convictions and 46 discharged persons, 3 motorists were also sent to jail by the mobile courts

At the Onitsha mobile court presided over by Mr. Eze Nwabasili from court 3 Magistrate Ogbaru division, 47 traffic offenders were arraigned today for contravening various traffic related offences ranging from overloading, seat belt, fire extinguisher, dangerous driving and light signal violations.
