FRSC TO PARTNER WITH CBN ON DRIVERS LICENSE
Pursuant to its on-going drive to restore the integrity of drivers’ license in Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Corps has initiated a partnership with Central Bank of Nigeria for financial institutions in the Country, to use the drivers’ license as reliable document for verification of their customers.
In a presentation at the Central Bank of Nigeria Headquarters, Abuja, the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka stated that aside from being a contributing factor to road traffic crashes, the issuance of fake drivers’ license poses security problems and additional challenges to government agencies such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigeria Police in discharging their statutory functions.
Speaking further, the FRSC Corps Marshal added that the Corps has presently verified about 3 million genuine drivers licenses on its data base and has created a link for real time and on-line assessment by relevant government agencies of this data. In addition ,a software has been established at some financial institutions such as the First Bank and United Bank of Africa for on-line transmission of information on traffic offences and offenders who pay their fines at such banks. The Corps Marshal also said that the present drivers license has some security features to prevent forgery and touting by some unscrupulous Nigerians.
He added that as part of its determination to build a broad spectrum of stakeholders in ensuring sanity on the nation’s highways, the FRSC has presently achieved about 2 million data on traffic offences and offenders on its software to further assist Insurance firms in the country to evaluate the traffic conduct and road crash record of their clients before tying up insurance policies and claims.
Responding, the Central Bank Governor described the FRSC numerous initiatives in re-branding the drivers license as commendable especially with the collective drive towards Information Technology revolution in Nigeria.
