PRESS STATEMENT
FRSC TO PUBLISH NAMES OF CONVICTED ROAD TRAFFIC OFFENDERS
Disturbed by the spate of increase in the number of traffic offenders convictions, Management of the Federal Road Safety Commission has concluded plans to publish names of traffic offenders brought before its mobile courts for traffic-related offences.
Making this disclosure, the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka stated that this measure has become necessary in view of the need to deter other motorists from contravening traffic rules and regulations.
The Corps Marshal also disclosed that a total of 793 traffic offenders were arraigned before mobile courts in the month of April 2008 at Edo, Nasarawa, Delta, Warri, Nnewi, Onitsha, Akwa Ibom, Abuja, Lokoja and Oyo Commands of the Commission.
Out of this number, a total of 746 offenders were sentenced to various prison terms or options of fine while 91 others were discharged and acquitted.
Establishment of mobile courts along patrol routes is in line with the provisions of the FRSC Act 2007 which empowers the Commission to liaise with Ministries of Justice and the Judiciary in the States and FCT to set up mobile courts in order to ensure speedy trial of traffic offenders, quick dispensation of justice and to warn recalcitrant road traffic offenders that the law would soon catch up with them.
